He started playing the violin at the age of seven and continued instruction until he was fourteen. He transferred to the Ruperti-Gymnasium in Mühldorf am Inn after finishing secondary school. He worked during his summer break on a construction site and saved up enough to buy his first guitar. Maffay was a founding member and guitarist for the band The Beat Boysin 1964.

At their first rehearsal spot, the Weißer Hirsch bar in Waldkraiburg, the band performed songs by Bob Dylan, The Pretty Things, The Small Faces, Herman’s Hermits, Cream, The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Kinks, and Donovan. They became well-known within a 50-kilometer radius of Mühldorf thanks to their performances there.

After being passed up for promotion twice in high school, Maffay dropped out and took an apprenticeship as a chemigrapher in Munich, where he ran across Margaret Kraus, daughter of a classmate and former teacher, Alfred Kraus. He made his singing debut with the folk-beat duet he and Margit formed.

They performed songs by artists such as Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul, and Mary, the Kinks, the Rolling Stones, Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton, and Paul Simon at the Song Parnass club in Munich, Germany. Songs were sung in Maffay’s native tongue of German as well as in English, French, Spanish, Hungarian, Romanian, and Russian.

When they performed, they were paid 10 DM each. Moreover, the duo dropped a single. The year was 1969, and Michael Kunze was hunting for young singers to perform songs he had composed when he stumbled across Maffay. Kunze released the film on January 15, 1970. Maffay’s first ever track, titled “You,” features a young singer.

First seen on television on the ZDF hit parade on March 21, 1970, Maffay has been performing ever since. Due to the success of Du, Maffay became a household name in Germany thanks to the hit parade of 1970. The song also charted in the Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Belgium, and Switzerland all at the same time.

His first number one success was the track “So Bist Du.” In 1989, he offered all of Germany an infectious melody by covering the East German band Karat’s “Über Sieben Brücken du must du gehn.” Peter Maffay released a live CD called “Tattoos” in 2010 to celebrate the band’s 40th year on stage.


Children love the pop fairy tale “Tabaluga,” which was released in 1983 as “Tabaluga or the Journey to Reason” and has six albums.
