In 2010, Wedel told the news agency dpa that he had to wait until he was three years older than he was in 1968 to get his first directing job on the film Gedenktag (1970). He was born on November 12, 1939, in Frankfurt, according to a biographical essay he wrote as an annexe to his 1965 dissertation on the Frankfurt Schauspielhaus that was submitted to the Philosophical Facultät of the Freie Universität Berlin.

Wedel was the son of Karl Wedel, an engineer who died in 1957 and was also the owner of a leather goods factory. Ada Torana, Ada’s mother, was a pianist who performed under the name Ada Stroh. Wedel arrived in Bad Nauheim and enrolled in the Ernst-Ludwig-Schule. He premiered his first play, Massada.

At the city’s Kurhaus on May 21, 1957, while he was only a high school student. Wedel was a 17-year-old tennis prodigy in Germany.He studied theatre and history at the Freie Universität Berlin under his “Ersatzpapa” Hans Knudsen. He was in charge of the Student Union when he was at school. In addition, he worked as a stage director and theatre critic.

Wedel later performed at the Amerika-House and the Hebbel Theater in Berlin. In 1966, Wedel started his professional career at Radio Bremen as an author and a horological director. In 1967, he moved to NDR Hamburg, where he worked as an assistant to Egon Monk, the head of the theatre department.

Dieter Meichsner trained him to become a house manager for the NDR. Wolfdietrich Schnurre’s short story Reusenheben inspired his first short film, Willi (1969). On June 17, 1953, the whole public saw his first major picture, Gedenktag (1970).

In 1972, Wedel had his first big hit with the three-parter “Once in a Lifetime: The Story of an Individual Home.” Numerous German home builders recognised themselves in the fictional Semmeling family, which survived almost all of the challenges of home construction.

In 1976, the concept was revisited in All Years – The Semmeling Family – and this time, the German average family’s vacation was shown in a critical light. In 2001, Wedel attempted to link The Affair of Semmeling with the German Financial Bureaucracy to the successful Semmeling films of the 1970s by avoiding the humoristically-satirical approach of 2001’s The Affair of Semmeling.

It was no longer possible to meet the 1970s-era drop rates in today’s radically different landscape.In 1978, Wedel became self-employed and co-founded the Active Film GmbH with film producer Jürgen Dohme. He thereafter worked as a director and producer on a number of socially conscious television projects.

Later, he worked on projects related to the Corona Film GmbH, where his longtime girlfriend and future wife, Ursula Wolters, serves as the company’s CEO.In addition to Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Marcel Pagnol’s The Frau des Bäckers, he staged both in Hamburg’s Thalia Theater under the direction of Peter Striebeck from 1980 to 1985, the latter of which was shown on German television in 1986.

During his tenure as a television director, Wedel made a name for himself as a master of complex multi-part narratives. In 1986, Hamburg started filming Wilder Westen included (1988) at a budget of $20 million, making it the most expensive Western for West German television at the time.

These films were followed by The Great Bellheim (1992), The Shadowman (1995), The King of St. Pauli (1998), The Affair of the Semmeling (2002), as well as Papa and Mama (2006) and most recently Gier (2010). There were several cameos in Wedel’s own films including Der große Bellheim, The King of St. Pauli, and The Shadowman.
